Oh come on, you've been dying to know - don't try and hide it from me. You have been tossing and turning at night thinknig "What is Marika doing, I must know!"

For the most part this winter has been amazingly mild and the weather so warm. Strolling in the quarter has been big. Yesterday, I spent a little longer than I had planned, which I guess happens when you run into friends and have the need to catch up. I also stopped by the record store to see Scott, and for a few minutes I was in charge of the music that was filling part of Bourbon Street. I went with Blondie, because she's classic.

I joined a writer's group.

I got a parking ticket, which kinda sucks. There was a time when I would've crumpled it up and thrown it away as a form of protest, but the last time I did that. My car got booted. On December 23rd. Okay, it was three tickets I crumpled up in protest, but you get the point. I'm as "damn the man" as the next girl, maybe more so, but a car boot can weigh heavy on the pocketbook. So yeah, $20 is on it's way to The City of New Orleans.

I discovered that sometimes when you buy a really cute pair of earrings on etsy, when they arrive they can be even cuter then you imagine. With cute earrings you can conquer the world.

Mmmm... doesn't that look good? I had yummy pizza with Karen. We are going to make voodoo dolls. Laugh if you want, but we have fabric and pins and you might just regret chuckling at our creativity. As always with my evening with Karen, when her car pulled away I thought of a billion other things I had to tell her. We're getting together again on Sunday. I'm thinking of making a list of all the things I want to tell her.

I've been working hard on CK. I have a whole new character, and I have to thank Alabaster Lisa from the OKC for her. I asked for a name and she gave me so much more. If you liked Emily's friends, I think you are really going to like her family.

I have four books I can't wait to read.

Chick Lit Challenge - Agnes And The Hitman

Synopsis: Agnes Crandall, author of the Cranky Agnes food column, had a bit of a problem. She's staked her entire net worth on putting on a wedding and things are not going according to plan, and that's before she hits a dog-napper with her frying pan unintentionally sending him to an early grave. That's when Shane, the man with no last name. crawls through her bedroom window to save her. Sure he's handsome, he's heroic, and he's also a hit-man. Soon the duo are tangled up in a missing fortune, the southern mob, wedding guests, two kidnapped flamingos, ruined wedding dresses and a dog named Rhett. There's only so much treachery, florists, photographers, and murder, a gal can take before she takes cranky to a whole new level.

Confession Time: I have had this book forever and I avoided reading it. I've always enjoyed Jennifer Crusie's books before but I think that the hero - Shane the hit-man was a big concern for me. You see, I like to like my heroes, and liking a hit-man could be a stretch for me. I was also concerned with the Bob Mayer thing. A man who primarily write thrillers partnering up for chick lit? Why? Oh me, and my silly pre conceived notions, when will I ever learn? I shouldn't have been concerned on either count. What misgivings I had about Shane were quickly forgotten because I loved Cranky Agnes, the frying pan wielding foodie so much, there didn't even need to be a hero. As always Crusie populated the pages with crazy characters that I wanted to know more about. As for Mr. Mayer, this book had a high octane energy, it starts off with the death of a would be dog napper and keeps on going - this was easily the most action packed murder/romance I've ever read.

What was missing? I'd like a little more from Shane who seemed stiff at times compared to Agnes. I would love to know more about Agnes's best friend Lisa, Sheriff Xavier, and handyman Garth. Maybe another visit to Two Rivers would be in order? Also I wouldn't have minded a recipe for Agnes's famous pancakes - somethings are too good not to share.

It occurred to me today, that I have a bazillion pictures of this place. I'm always trying to get a better shot of the angels, and I never succeed. I think the zoom capacity I have is lacking and I need a better camera to do that. The thing is, I kinda love my camera and getting something more expensive seems like a waste of money for a girl who just posts pictures on her blog, especially when there are bills to pay. So till the day comes when a new expensive camera is in the works you are stuck with far away angels. But hey, they are still watching over you, right?

Out of my dreams, and into my car

My plan for today was to sit down and tell you all about my wonderful experience with the Metairie Public Library writers group, because it was wonderful. I don't know if they learned anything from me, but I learned something from each and every one of them. Then life gave me an interesting story to tell.

But first...

Are those cabbage? I think they are cabbage, but I'm not a huge cabbage fan, so I'm not really sure.

Okay so here is what happened. I locked myself in my car today. Yes, you read that correctly, I said I locked myself IN my car.

From time to time, workmen come to the house, and I have to let them into the main gate. I was waiting outside for awhile, just reading my book - waiting...waiting... and waiting.

It's a little cold outside, and for me that means a lot cold outside, sometimes I believe my innards are still set to the Florida Sun. So like the right thinking person I am I decided to wait in my car where it was a little warmer. I got in. I couldn't get out.

Yes, my doors were unlocked. But as hard as I pushed and pushed I could not get out. Not just one door either, ALL the doors. I was trapped in my car. IN MY CAR!

Thankfully, my phone was on it's last bar and I was able to make a call to the "come unlock my car" people. They kindly came out and did the thing they do, and I believe there was some snickering. Especially when the guy asked me "Did you try rolling the window down?"

This is how I felt..

I told him that they wouldn't, although they worked fine for him. Between you and me and the internet, rolling down the window never even occurred to me.

PS ... a big thank you to upside down dogs, I stole the puggie pix from them. Often their pictures are the only way to capture my emotions.

Sometimes leaving your recyclable tote bag at home when you are going to the grocery can be a very interesting thing, even if it means a walk through the the French Quarter wondering "How am I going to get everything home? maybe I should just order pizza and get everything tomorrow..." Still I walked, because I needed a picture for Walk Hard, so what's a girl to do? She must walk and decide when she gets there. Besides The Good Doctor wanted some chutney. I was on a mission.

So I stopped here. New inventory! Honey oatmeal cookies, big cheese stix, a carob banana cookie, and peanut butter carob nuggets. Someone was very happy when I got home. Also how does Dash know I went there? He was on me like white on rice when I got home.

I take a look at everything once I'm in Rouses, and decide my big touch army messenger bag is sturdy enough to handle the job. It's an ARMY messenger bag, so it should hold up to war, two jars of Newman's Own Cabernet Marinara and some ricotta cheese should not be a problem.

Yes, that is a very pretty spider pin on my messenger bag, just because it's army doesn't mean it has to be uggo. That thing is packed two, three things of Kraft shredded cheese, two jars of said marinara, two jars of Major Grey's chutney, my writerly type notebook, and my wallet. It was heavy. In the other bag, ricotta, lean ground beef and lasagna noodles. Let the lugging begin.

The Quarter is pretty packed, the lugging is slow, and my shoulder is already sore. I get to the CC's and I'm mentally swearing, this was a bad idea - and then Frank screamed my name. Frank is my favorite street musician. he plays a lot on Royal, and practices in the park. He comes running over - which is cool, because I haven't talked to him in a while, I get to rest my shoulder, and it lets all the tourists know that I am lucky enough to live here - because I love that.

So we chat, he sees my bag is heavy, and he offers to carry it for me on the way home. How could I refuse? And that is where the fun began.

You see, Frank believes in aliens and alien abductions. He believes they purposely crashed at Roswell so they could negotiate a treaty with the US allowing them a certain amount of abductions a year in exchange for new technology. The stipulation is that people can't remember how they were experimented on. By the way, according to Frank, the aliens routinely go over their abduction allotment by the thousands because as we all know, what's the government going to do about it, he who has the ray guns wins. Anyway, the experiments? Alien/human hybrids, and the hybrids don't know they are hybrids. This is where it got interesting - Frank believes that when you read about someone heinous in the news, someone who does such horrible things that you are left wondering "is this person human?", isn't a human at all. They are a defective hybrid. He believes that people with extreme mental illness - also hybrids, because what can exist in another world, won't necessarily exist well here.

New Orleans is littered with hybrids - the good, non defective kind, because hybrids all are searching for something - who they really are, and they often turn to the arts to find it. So writers, painters, musicians, poets - they could be hybrids. And this is when it hit me. "Frank is coming out of the hybrid closet!"

I'm not writing this to make fun of Frank, even though I think as a theory it is out there. It's just that I think that there is an interesting story there, and it's what happened to me today. I feel kind of honored that he shared it with me.

We finally got home, and I wanted to give him a little cash for helping me, and he was reluctant to take it, but then I reminded him that he played a song for me on Royal, and he should be compensated for his art, so he took the money, and then he leaned over and whispered to me, even though there was no one around. "You know Marika, if that's what you are, it's what you are."

Frank wasn't kicking down his alien closet at all, he was dragging me out! That's something to think about.

nutella banana nuggets

Oh yes, a cooking tutorial. Today not only will you learn to make Nutella banana nuggets, but you will walk away with an understanding of why I don't cook.

First, I got the idea here, only I don't like peanut butter or coconut. I do like Nutella though. Wait, no - I freaking LOVE Nutella. Not only is in the stuff dreams are made of, but I have special memories of having Nutella for breakfast with my Oma in Germany way before Nutella goodness was available on the shelves at Walmart. Notice how everything is perfect in that tutorial.

So here is where we start.

Bananas and Nutella. So far so good.

Slicing the bananas - a-okay.

I microwaved the Nutella for 30 seconds to make it more melty and workable. We are doing okay. This might work!

It's so gooey. This is where I started to worry. Oh use wax paper!

I discover that a knife will not spread melted gooey Nutella so well. A spoon does okay, but it gets messy.

Well look at that. Marika has made something that looks like --- well, you know what that looks like. It certainly doesn't look like anything in the tutorial, that I did not follow.

But hey, we've come this far so why not pop them in the freezer and let the cold work it's magic.

Look little tiny Nutella cow pies! But I was raised by a woman that firmly believed that it was not how the treats looked. (My mother makes a spritz cookie that is pornographic ) - but how good taste. and I have to say, one of the things I miss about not being home for Christmas is my Mom's dirty cookies. and these little Nutella nuggets - mmmm. You have chocolatey Nutella goodness, and in the center the frozen banana tastes a little like a bite of banana ice cream. The Nutella left my fingers a little messy, but all in all I'd say Nutella banana nuggets are a success.

Dash, aka Houdini, while working some sort of death defying feat that he will surely use to impress me at a later, has gotten his paw caught in his collar not once but twice, scaring me to death. So Dash, at least in the house is living collar free. Maybe that was the point.

Remember that contest I was in at work? I won. Wait, that's not impressive enough. I won by 8,000 points. so the prize is mine - all mine. And for anyone that has ever played a board game with me, they know the real pleasure for me was pounding the competition into dust. It's not the winning with me, it's the complete ruin of the competition that I love. SUCCESS!

I did not successfully complete NANOWRIMO and I blame you.

However, despite that, CK moves along. In fact, Alabaster Lisa from he OKC and I recently had a conversation that involved green bean casserole.

The other day on my walk, it hit me "GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE! HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT?" A certain part of CK that wasn't clicking is chugging away now. So yeah, inspiration is found in the strangest places sometimes among the French's french fried onions and Campbell's Cream Of Mushroom Soup.

And that goes hand in hand with our annual porch party, because really it is MUCH more fun to heckle the singers from your own home with a drink in your hand.

This year the event started a little early. There was some artist's selling their wares in the park

There was a band, but the singer was shall we say ... less than stellar? I know, I am always so critical! Call me crazy but I think if you're going to sing Bonnie Raitt, you should have some chops. Also there was a hotdog vendor that was frying his dogs in bacon grease. I know, that sounds terrible! Who am I kidding? It sounds DELISH! It smelled heavenly! I don't know how I managed to pass!

It was a pretty nice event - don't believe me? Ask this young lady.

Smart move on Foxy's part, not only is she dressing in layers, but she has blankets with her as well.

The real festivities were at night when the Pfister Sister's led the carolers.

Until I went to see them, I had no idea that my neighbor Vat was a Pfister Sister! The ladies and Vat were very generous with their stage several kids wanted to join them - and join they did.

Mostly my neighbors and I listened from the porch. And several people dropped by to visit. I guess that's one of the best things about having the coolest porch in the neighbor hood - it's prime for visiting. Here is one of our youngest guests - Poppy, who enjoyed the mulled cider. As you can see she's a fan of Hello Kitty, but who isn't?

There were a few stories focused on what the neighborhood used to be like, who lived where and all the strange things that can happen when you live in our little corner of the world. I'm pretty lucky I think, I live in a neighborhood that celebrates itself. A place that not only is there caroling in the park, but a large group of people participate and look forward to it. Mostly I'm lucky to live in a neighborhood where people appreciate and enjoy each other . I wish you all could live in the Marigny - home of the best porch parties ever.

One Stop Shopping

After yet another let down at the new Rouse's, this time there were oranges, but no butter. Okay, I know that they are new, but it is the week of Thanksgiving and you need to have butter for the good people of New Orleans, we have mash potatoes that will need melty creamy goodness. We are low on churns in the Marigny.

Off to Dorignac's I went, because yes - it's in Metry, but it has everything and then some. It really is the one stop food center. I knew not only would I be able to get butter there, but probably everything else on my list.

Picture it, I'm in the frozen dessert section, because you know I'm not making a real peach pie, that's just insane. Right there is this rather cute guy. I think the best way to describe him would be the term "good ol' boy" He was a little scruffy, but not overly so. He seemed like the kind of guy that probably drove an older pick up truck and liked to hunt and fish. This is exactly the type of guy I need, someone who is going to get me through the zombie apocalypse and look good doing it. Thank God I wore makeup! So he has the door of the section I needed open. I reached in and grab Mrs. Smith Ready in 30 Minutes Peach Pie and I said "I see you've discovered my secret recipe." I know, what a dork I am. But he laughed. And then he shopped with me. I know, what? But it happened just that way, he and I went down the rest of the aisles together. We chit chatted, got our stuff together, it was odd!

So you know, at no point had I stumbled, fallen or tripped. I was not drooling. I checked my pants, they were zipped, my shirt was not inside out, it was not on backwards. There was nothing on the shelf. My purse was in my sight at all times, and my phone, camera, ipod, and ATM card were all where they needed to be. I even checked my pants again. So there didn't seem to be any rip off scam, and I had yet to give him a reason to think I'm "special" . He walked with me out to Quasi and loaded my groceries. So I was thinking, 'this guy might be into me.' Which is a weird feeling for me to have.

And that is where my little romance ends. We wished each other a happy Thanksgiving, and he went to his truck - an older pick up truck by the way.

Now I'm thinking that I should stalk .. I mean shop at Dorignac's more often.
